K-9 Leco of the Soledad Police Department was seriously injured during K-9 training at Fort Ord over the holidays.  His life was saved by his handler having the Cover Your K9 Trauma Kit & training for immediate bandaging and the rapid emergency surgery by veterinary surgeon Dr. Greg Marsolais of Pet Emergency Specialists of Monterey to stop the life threatening bleeding & repair the severed artery & reattach the tendon in his leg.
With this help K-9 Leco will be
able to go on duty soon!

"Cover Your K-9" Regional Emergency Medicine Course

Law enforcement patrol and detection dogs are routinely exposed to hazardous situations in the course of carrying out their duties and protecting the community. To help keep them safe, we offer “Cover Your K-9” Regional Emergency Medicine Course to enable K-9 officers to learn advanced first aid and emergency care skills to assist their police dogs

in the event of an emergency.

 ~

This is an intensive all day course that includes lectures on the maintenance and preventive care for working dogs, emergency care for patrol and detection dogs and trauma management.

~

Since 2011 we have put on 6 K-9 Emergency Medicine Courses and distributed more than 625 custom Cover Your K-9 Trauma Kits to law enforcement K-9 teams at no charge.  The kits cost $300 each & we have a waiting list of K-9 officers who would like to attend our upcoming.  Please donate to help keep our K-9s cared for in case of an emergency!

Thank you to our many volunteers who comprise the production teams for the Police & Working K-9 Foundation Cover Your K9 Trauma Kits:  Richard & Laurie Snitzer, Emily Tamkin & family, the Sage Centers team, the students of Mercy High School

& our many other volunteers who help us

put these life-saving kits together!

Assisting with the course have been members of the Alameda County Sheriff’s SAR K-9 Unit, Santa Clara Co, Contra Costa Co, Placer County, Plumas County & Nevada  Co Sheriff's SAR K-9 Teams,  Monterey Bay Search Dogs, Monterey County Sheriff's SAR K-9 Unit, Santa Cruz County Sheriff's SAR K-9 Team, members of CARDA along with the “Cover Your K-9”, K-9 Ambassador and Pet Food Express volunteer teams. During the ‘hands on’ segment of the course furry dog mannequins called ‘resusi-dogs’ are used to teach K-9 CPR to the teams.  Special volunteer ‘demo dogs’ (from our search & rescue volunteer teams) patiently allow their legs to be wrapped to help the officers learn splinting and bandaging skills.

The course provides a wonderful day of learning that will be crucial in helping our K-9 officers care for their hard-working dogs every day as well as in emergency situations.

The Cover Your K-9 Trauma Kits have been designed with the help of the veterinary specialists and include many items not found in commercially available kits, including a
special K-9 oxygen mask.

The custom kits are provided to each K-9 officer to carry in their patrol cars to enable them to provide first aid care

to their police dog in case of an emergency.

Our Emergency Medicine Course and

the custom “Cover Your K-9” Trauma Kits are provided at no cost to our regional law enforcement departments.
